National Quilting Day 2011 - 1st Baby Quilt

Pillow Pals project

"Pillow Pals" is a project started by one of Gail S. girl scouts, Christina.  The girl scouts are making or collecting pillowcases and filling them with personal items, books, magazines, games, stuffed animals, hand-made items, school items, toiletries, jewelry, bracelets, etc.  The pillowcases will be given to Chenango County children in foster care.  If anyone is interested in donating pillowcases or items with which to fill them, you may contact Gail or Sew Nice.

The Chenango Piecemakers firmly believe in giving back to the community that has so generously supported them over the years.  They are one of the most active service organizations in the area.  The members of the guild understand that they have been blessed with a gift that enables them to give comfort to others.
Many of these quilters or their families have suffered with serious illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes, heart conditions, etc.  That is why they have given so generously to organizations such as
Hospice, The American Heart Association and The American Cancer Society's local  breast cancer program "Reach for Recovery".
Many of the members are retired teachers who understand the importance of our youth to a community's future.  Therefore, donations to Big Brother/Big Sister, The Place, Guernsey Memorial Library, and local classrooms have also benefitted from their generosity.
The Chenango Piecemakers realize that there is always a demand to help those in need.   That is why they have made generous contributions to Habitat for Humanity and Catholic Charities "Roots and Wings"
domestic violence program.  They also provide monthly offerings to the local food pantries.
The guild members also experience a lot of joy in their lives such as weddings, births, graduations
and friendships. What better way to celebrate than through the joy of giving.  The Chenango Piecemakers share their joy by passing it on to others through their quilts.   As a result, dozens of quilts are given each year to the maternity ward at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Below is just some of what the Chenango Piecemakers have done since the year 2000.  It does not include the countless hours they have spent sharing their craft at shows and demonstrations, or invested in the quilts they donate.
Many of the quilts are assembled at SUPER SEW SUNDAY.  One day a year on Super Bowl Sunday guild members meet for a sewing marathon.  They put together as many quilts as possible using blocks that are made and donated on a monthly basis at the meetings.
All monetary donations are voted on by the guild's members.  Most of the money is raised at the "FESTIVAL OF QUILTS" show.  This is done through admission price, ticket donations for their Opportunity Quilt and a silent auction of handmade items.  The show is held every other year on Columbus weekend at Oxford Academy High School, 50 South Washington Ave., Oxford, NY.  There is plenty of handicap parking and the building is completely handicap accessible.  Please mark your calendars and come share the day with them.  You'll have an opportunity to view more than 300 beautiful quilts and at the same time you will be helping them help the community.
